Selection: High school students from the Salt Lake City School District are asked to volunteer for one school year. Training begins in August and court hearings begin at the end of September continuing through the end of May. There are several Youth Courts through out Utah. For more information about a Youth Court near you please contact us at 801-322-1815.

Court hearings: Thursday evenings from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM in the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse. Panels of seven student members conduct the court hearings. They deliberate and come to a consensus on a disposition which focuses on: repairing harm, building skills and connecting to community.

Mentoring: A second component of the program is ongoing peer mentoring. One of the panel members volunteers to be the peer mentor while the referred youth is completing the disposition.

Selection criteria include:

1) Responsibility, maturity, ability to be fair, and demonstration of leadership qualities

2) Interest in and willingness to mentor your peers

3) Willingness to serve as a whole school year
